감각이 멈추고, 다시 시작되는 순간 신광호의 작업은 감각이 먼저 도착하고 사유가 그 뒤를 더듬는 단절된 인식의 과정에서 출발한다. 그가 말하는 ‘감절적 사유’는 감정이나 생각을 하나의 완결된 서사로 엮는 방식이 아니다. 감각과 사고는 매끄럽게 이어지지 않으며, 때로는 그 사이에서 사유가 중단되고 감각마저 멈춘다. 작가는 의미가 정리되기 이전, 감각과 사유가 어긋나고 정지하는 그 순간을 회화 안에 붙잡아 둔다.

화면 위의 색과 형태 역시 하나의 의미를 향해 나아가지 않는다. 두껍게 겹쳐진 색과 반복된 붓질은 무언가를 완성하기 위한 축적이라기보다 지워지지 않은 흔적에 가깝다. 인물의 얼굴은 명확한 정체성을 획득하지 못한 채 색과 물질 속에서 생성되고 무너지며, 형상은 완결되기보다 중간에서 멈춘 상태로 남는다.

이러한 화면은 감정이 지나간 뒤 남은 잔상이며, 사유가 중단된 자리이자 감각이 응고된 순간을 보여준다. 전시 제목의 ‘잔해(殘骸)’는 바로 이처럼 하나의 의미로 수렴되지 못한 채 화면 위에 남겨진 색과 형상, 감각의 흔적을 가리킨다. 그러나 신광호의 회화에서 멈춤은 끝을 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 응고된 색과 멈춰 선 형상을 바라보는 순간, 관람자의 감각과 감정은 다시 움직이기 시작한다.

작품은 무엇을 이해하거나 해석해야 하는 대상으로 닫히지 않고, 설명할 수 없는 감각 앞에서 잠시 머무르게 하는 상태로 존재한다. 《21번째 잔해》는 사유가 중단되고 감각이 응고된 그 틈을 보여주며, 바로 그 멈춘 자리에서 새로운 감각과 감정이 시작되는 순간을 제안한다.

<21st Remains>: Where Sensation Pauses and Begins Again

Shin Kwang Ho’s work begins with a discontinuous process of perception in which sensation arrives first and thought follows behind, feeling its way forward.

What the artist calls “Affective–Segmented Thinking” is not a means of weaving emotions or thoughts into a coherent narrative. Sensation and thought do not unfold in seamless continuity; at times, thought is interrupted and sensation itself comes to a halt.

Shin focuses on this moment before meaning takes shape, when sensation and thought fall out of alignment and come to a standstill.

The colors and forms on the canvas likewise do not move toward a single meaning. Thick layers of color and repeated brushstrokes are less an accumulation toward completion than traces that resist erasure.

The faces of his figures never acquire clearly defined identities, but instead emerge and dissolve within layers of color and material, while their forms remain suspended before reaching completion.

These paintings are afterimages left in the wake of emotion, sites where thought has been interrupted and sensation has momentarily congealed.

The word “remains” (殘骸) in the exhibition title refers precisely to these traces of color, form, and sensation left on the surface without resolving into a singular meaning.

Yet in Shin’s paintings, stillness does not signify an end. Rather, as viewers encounter these congealed colors and suspended forms, sensation and emotion begin to move again.

The works do not present themselves as objects that must be understood or interpreted; instead, they invite viewers to linger before sensations that resist explanation.

《21st Remains》 reveals the interval in which thought is interrupted and sensation congeals, suggesting that it is precisely from this suspended moment that sensation and emotion begin anew.
